The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development successfully organised a Children’s Parliament at Sakhisizwe Local Municipality Hall.

This session brought together high school learners, stakeholders, and community leaders to address the critical issue of substance abuse.

The Children’s Parliament provided a platform for young individuals to voice their opinions, influence policy, and suggest solutions for challenges impacting their lives.

Learners engaged in discussions about the effects of substance abuse, exchanged potential solutions, and considered the legislative framework established by the Prevention and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act No. 70 of 2008.

Representatives from various sectors, including traditional leaders, ward councilors, SAPS, the Department of Education, and community organisations, attended the event to support the learners’ contributions.

According to the Department of Social Development, the Children’s Parliament not only amplified the voices of children but also created a safe environment for them to engage in governance and shape future policy directions.

The department emphasized that the discussions highlighted the urgent need to address substance abuse among youth and the significance of empowering learners to play an active role in developing solutions for their communities.
