Formation and background
Vukani Community Radio is situated in Cala and Queenstown. It was established in 1993 by Cala University Students Association (CALUSA) and broadcasted for the first time on 09 April 2006. Due to legal requirements CALUSA had to transfer Vukani authority to the community through a community elected structure, the Board. We broadcast in communities of Chris Hani District Municipality and nearby local municipalities like Mbashe, Elundini, OR Tambo, Mnquma and Amahlathi the following towns: Cala, Elliot, Engcobo, Tsomo, Cofimvaba, Lady Frere, Indwe, Dordrecht, Molteno, Sterkstroom, Ilinge and Komani (Queenstown), Cradock, Middelburg, Ugie, Maclear, Tsolo, Mthatha, Ngqamakwe, Dutywa, Butterworth, Cradock, Graaf-Reinet, Jamestown, Stutterheim, King Williams Town, Cathcart, Hoffmeyer.
Vukani Community Radio broadcasts on three frequencies which are 90.06, 98.4 – 99.09 FM, targeting general listeners of all ages. It prides itself with programming that addresses topical issues of local, provincial and national interest such as crime, health, social development, disability, economy and so on. Most of the programmes are locally produced and contribute to the development of our society by using air-waves to educate, entertain and inform the communities that Vukani Community Radio serves.
