Story: Nikilitha Burns

The spirit of Ubuntu was alive in Phakamisani Township, Cala, when Councillor Ncedisa Miso of the Sakhisizwe Local Municipality led a social outreach programme dedicated to uplifting vulnerable families.

The initiative, inspired by September’s celebration of culture and heritage in South Africa, saw Cllr Miso spearheading a soup kitchen and donating clothes to needy households in the township.

“As people of South Africa who love culture and tradition, and coming from a month of pride, we felt it was important to share with others,” said Cllr Miso.

“This shows that umntu ngumntu ngabantu, we are bringing back the culture of caring for one another. Instead of burning or throwing away clothes, let us donate them to those who need them most.”

Cllr Miso stressed that reviving Ubuntu can help address pressing social challenges. “If we bring back the spirit of Ubuntu and live our culture, we may be able to reduce crime and abuse. Our traditions teach us respect and compassion, and that is what we should never forget,” she added.

Residents of Phakamisani welcomed the programme, saying such initiatives strengthen community bonds and remind people of the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Many expressed hope that the event would inspire continued acts of solidarity across the township.
