The newly elected Executive Mayor of Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality Cllr Madoda Papiyana accepting his new responsibility urged councilors to focus on serving communities with humility and never take their responsibilities for granted. This comes after a Special Council meeting held at the Jesus Chris Church in Komani.
He replaces Cllr Thembeka Bunu who tendered her resignation as the Municipality’s Executive Mayor. Papiyana also praised the outgoing Executive Mayor for steering the ship towards the right direction despite challenges that are faced by the municipality.
He was contested by DA councillor Tokkie Deysel received 12 votes while Papiyana received 42 votes out of the 54 councillors who councillors who casted their voted through a ballot system.
Cllr Madoda Papiyana joined the Municipality as a councillor in October replacing Cllr Sibusiso Mvana who had resigned as a councillor. Cllr Mvana was a PR Councillor who served as a Portfolio Head for Integrated Planning and Economic Development (IPED).
He said,
“I urge that there be unity and teamwork among councillors from various organisation as the municipality’s challenges need a collective approach to overcome. As the municipality is under national intervention, the council must never shy away from scrutinising progress to determine whether or not improvements can be reported as envisaged by the initial motive of the intervention.”
The Executive Mayor announced his Mayoral Committee where no changes were made to the previous one except for the IPED Department which will be headed by Cllr Thembeka Bunu.
Meanwhile, the Council also welcomed the newly elected Ward Councillor for Ward 33, Cllr Ntombizodwa Marawu who attended her first Council meeting. She replaces the late Cllr Ntombekhaya Kortman who sadly passed away in September this year.
